About the exhibition

The Spirit of Landscape is a solo painting exhibition by expressive landscape artist Viola Hortová.

The exhibition brings together landscape paintings created between 2023 and 2026, alongside selected sketchbooks that offer a glimpse into the artist’s creative process.

Viola’s practice begins and ends with landscape and nature. Working primarily en plein air, she paints immersed in the atmosphere of a place, combining the spirit of the landscape with her own emotional experience. Her work explores the idea that landscape is not something we simply observe, but something we stand within, carrying our emotions, memories and thoughts, and over time something that becomes part of us.

Location: Alma Yard, Studio 15, Plymouth

Studio 15 is accessed from the Yard and is on the first floor. Please note that the space is not fully wheelchair accessible.

Viola Hortová is an expressive landscape artist with Central European roots, based in South West England. Her practice is grounded in plein air painting and a deep connection to landscape, which she approaches as both subject and studio. Working across painting and sketchbooks, Viola explores the emotional, sensory and intuitive experience of being within landscape, inviting viewers to connect with the spirit of place and their own inner responses.

Join Viola for a guided viewing of the exhibition, where she will share her creative process, materials, and the ideas behind the work. The tour lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes and includes time for questions and conversation.

A gentle, artist led workshop inviting participants to explore and express their own inner landscape, inspired by the exhibition. No previous art experience is needed. Materials are provided, feel free to bring your own art supplies. Limited availability, please book in advance.
